SYDNEY MORNING HERALD ON PROHIBITION. DESTRUCTIVE GALE. A NEW FIBRE INDUSTRY. |Fb B Press Association. | Sydnky. April 8. Almost daily new gold discoveries are reported with splendid returns from the Toowong reefs in the Albury district, while good gold has been found in Gulgong. An assay of stone brought from Sudest, New Guinea, yielded at the rate of 620z to the ton. This Day. The Sydney morning Herald, referring to the proposal of the Prohibition Party in New Zealand that a plebiscite should be taken on the direct issue of whether alcoholic liquor should be sold in the colony or not, says judging by the ordinary history of events it may be expected that this rapidity in pressing the views of the extremists will lead to a reaction, and temperance reform may be thrown back instead of hastened by precipitate action. The power to reduce the number of hotels by one fourth repeating the process every triennial election should be substantial enough to satisfy their reasonable requirements. A new reef, showing excellent gold has been discovered six miles from Wyalong. Brisbane, This Day. A heavy gale at Cocktown demolished the State School and many other buildings. The greater portion of the jetty was also washed away. M Elboitbne. April 8 A representative of an English provision merchant has already purchased about £50,000 worth of butter for the ensuing Home season. He states that the high prices which ruled last year were due to an abnormally bad season, and that it would not be right to encourage exporters in the idea they will get the same rates next season. This Day. Experimental cultivation of hemp has been successfully carried out at Bruthen. The produce is of splendid fibre, and realised £30 per ton.
