Severe Weather in Napier.

THE RIVEBS FLOODED. THE BHEAKWATEB DAMAGED TO THE EXTENT OF 412000. (Per Press Association). j Napibb, April 2. Eight inches of rain fell in thirtyfive hours from Saturday night to Monday morning. The Tutaekuri and Petane rivers are in high flood. Taradaje and Meanee were in a worse plight than at floods in December last for a few hours, but the water quickly subsided on cessation of the rain today. Farndon was also heavily flooded. In Petane Valley the water was higher than was known before. The Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri, though bank high, did not overflow to any considerable extent and Clive was free from flood. A good many sheep have been lost, but the losses of stock are insignificant when compared with those in December. As the waters rose more gradually, there was time to move stock. It is reported that much damage was done up country. The rain was accompanied by a gale of unprecedented severity. The chief damage was to gardens and fences, an enormous number of large trees being blown down. A very heavy sea was ruuning from the northeast, but the wind was southeast. This raised enorraouß waves of solid green seas, thirty feet deep, which swept over the cant of the breakwater, but no damage of any importance was done either to the breakwater or the wharf. The mole to the west of the breakwater, now under construction, was, however, heavily damaged, about 400 feet being swept away. The loss is about £2000. The crane also went over into the sea. Wellington, April 2. Telegraphip communication between Wellington and Napier lias been completely interrupted since yesterday afternoon. The lines are down be tween Hastings and Napier, as the result of one of the severest gales experienced in that district for some time past.
