THE TEMPERANCE PARTY.
Although the elections under the new licensing laws may not be looked on as victories to either side, yet they have done this good, they have proved that the Temperance Party can now claim to be a recognised power in the land. As such, they will exercise a direct influence towards the improvement of the class of houses in which the sale of liquor is permitted, and the wiping out of existence of the mere drinking shops which are the real cause of a great proportion of the drunkenness in tbe large towns in the colony. It is more than possible that if the trade is not better regulated in both town and country after the strong hint which has been given at the elections, the Moderates may ultimately join hands with the Extremists to accomplish the desired end of only granting licenses to first class hotels, managed by competent persons, or of sweeping them away altogetker. The day has gone past when the Temperance Party could be called " mere faddists." They have created their own strength and have learned how to augment it day by day.
