Escape From New Caledonia.
Melbourne, Marcn 14. Andrew Marks, the New Ualedonu oscapee, who was arrested at Ballina, state! that be is a British subject and a counei by trade. His wife went from Franc< to London while he was travelling, taking with her as a servant a French girl whon: he befriended, but without the consenl of her parenia. The girl some time aftei wrote to her friends in Paris, and hei letter was found in a book belonging tc Marks l)y the Parisian police, who arrested him on the charge of procuration, and he was sentenced to eight jears' penal ser» vitudo. He wishes his case to be investigated and the legality of his imprisonment tested. He says that after landing he made no attempt at concealment, and denies tnat ho sought to esc.ipe He asserts that he was out fishing and was driven to sea by a gale. All the food he had was three loaves and some flour and water m a tin, but he caught bonito during the voyage and water in his sail sufficient to prevent him suffering from hunger or thirst.- Post's Correspondent.
