The Fielding Star. Published Daily. TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 1894. Local and General News.

Mass will be celebrated at St. Bridget's, Feilding, on Sunday next at 11 a.m. The Wellington suburbs have elected a complete temperance ticket, including one woman (Miss Cowlcrs.) Messrs Gorton and Son hold a large and important stock sale at Messrs Man son's Homestead, Stanway, to-morrow. The Returning Officer, Mr A. Ross, publishes to-day the result of the local option poll and the names of those elected to form a licensing committee in the Rangitikei district. Messrs Spence and Spences sale of J. C. Morey's bankrupt stock is a great success and on Saturday evening last the shop was filled with crowds of buyers. In our report last issue of the Wesleyau concert at Apiti liejdjaat-wecli, our* correspondent omitted to mention the names of the Misses Preudergast and Cummerneld, and Messrs Hargreaves, Hartley, Cummerfield, F. Fanthorpe, and E. Curreen as having assisted. The following gentlemen were returned as members of the Palmerston Licensing Committee :— F. Bryant, 1055 : G. M. Snelson, 1054 ; D. Buick, 1051 1 R. S. Abraham, 1040; R. Edwards, 1021; A. Jack, 1011; F. Pirani, 1009; D, Grant, 995. The local option poll is ineffective. Professor Sweeney's variety combination appeared at the Assembly Rooms last night to a crowded holiday house, A long and varied programme consisting of songs, dances and recitations was presented to the evident satisfaction of the audience. The company appear at Mar-ton.to-night. The Temperance Hall, in Glasgow House, was well tilled last evening to listen to the reproduction of the Cantata " Under the Palms," by the Primitive Methodist choir, which was assisted by local amateurs aud friends from Pal- i raeistou North. The Cantata was capitally rendered, and was greatly appreciated by the audience present. The performance announced to be given to-night by the Duubar-Field Dramatic Company, will not take place, owing to unavoidable circumstances, The manager of the company much regrets any disappointment that may have been caused to the Feilding public, and hopes to be able to appear at a future date which will be duly announced. To be considered white it is the one ambition of the European clad, Sandwich Islander. A very dusky maiden, clothed sumptuously in a parasol, was one dayjbraygiug of Eiiglish enterprise in one embracive "we." "But you have no white blood in %'ou," said a bystander. " Oli, yes, 1 have," she replied in triumph ; "my great-grandfather helped eat Captain Cook." The Manchester Rifles returned from the encampment at Porirua this morning shortly after twelve o'clock. They had a most enjoyable outing, and everyone was well satisfied with the work done. A detailed account of their adventures will probably appear in our issue of to-morrow. Sevei'al of the officers, noncommissioned officers and men were granted leave to remain in Wellington for a day or two to yiew the beauties of the Empire City. As threshing proceeds, the deplorable consequences of the unseasonable weather through the critical periods of the growth of the grain plants become more and more manifest (says the Tiniaru Herald). We learn that all over the low country the 3 r ields are extremely disappointing. Heavy crops which looked like giving 40 and 60 bushels have yielded 17 aul 1G bushels. We hear of one person who has a rent of 15s an acre to pay out of a crop of 16 bushels of oats that looked like being a profitable one. The Eketahuua football team visiting this coast defeated a Wangamii team on Saturday last by 12 points to 2. The following team has been selected (subject to alteration) to represent Feilding against Eketahnna on the oval to-mor-row afternoon: — Full-back, Broughton : three-quarters, Jack and Joe Robinson, Matravers ; halves, R. Parr, Shannon ; forwards, Old ham, Giescu, Matheson, Whisker, J. Whisker, Greig, Williams, Smith, Johnson, Emergencies, Hemmingway aud Kiwi, backs, Macfarlane and Carty forwards. On Sunday last Easter services were held in St John's Church, when the congregations — especially the evening one — were very large. The church had been very tastefully decorated by ladies of the congregation, and it has never before looked nicer than it did on Sunday last. Mr Sherwill conducted the ruoru- ' ing service, and the Rev Innos Jonew officiated in the evening, and taking his text from St Paul's epistle to the Phillipians, 10th verse, 3rd chapter, preached an excellent sermon. The choir rendered capital music, and the whole service was bright aud cheerful. The statement his Loen made that children in one of the Wellington public schools have betn beaten pimply because their parents were too poor to provide them with books. We agree with the Post when it says that the mere pos.«i* bihty of such barbarity is enough to make the blood boil in the reins of every honest man and woman. The teacher who would inflict corporal punishment on a child for not having books, withoat first ascertaining, beyond the possibility of doubt, that the fault was the child's aod that the absence of books was not due to the parents inability to supply them, is a disgrace to the Service, and should not for an hour longer than is sufficient to establish the facts be permitted tD remain in the service of the Board. No penalty short «f absolute public dismissal will satisfy public mind, or afford a guarantee the repetilion of such a shameful outrage. Since Messrs Davy and Mills have taken over the proprietary of the Red House, the establishment has been looked upon as one containing as good a stock of general store goods, drapery, clothing etc., as any house on the coast and the thorough experience which Mr Mills has had iv the latter lines enables him to buy judiciously, cheaply, and according to the public taste. An exceedingly large and choice assortment of autumn aud winter goods has just been opened up by this firm, and all that the public vised to do to convince them that this one of the finest and most fashionable consignments ever opened up in Feilding is simply to inspect it. Miss J)ianiond, who has charge of the millinery department, has lately returned from Wellington with /i. capital assortment of tasteful and fashionable millinery, and the most fastidious cannot but b« pleased with the display, We would earnestly direct tlic attention uf our fwuki-s to a, replace advertisement which appears today from Messrs Davy nnd Mills, and they should follow this up by iujmedU ■ ately paying a visit to this favourite I cstablitfliLueut.
