The Licensing Elections.
The interest taken in thb election in Feilding was very small, only about 300 voters having exercised tbe privilege. It is well known tbat many persons refrained from voting because they were of the opinion the Act will prove unworkable, mml voting therefore would be so much waste of time. In the afternoon there were a few vehicles in use but not to the extent, by a long way, when there is a general or even a Borough election. The following are the results of the Rangitikei and the other electorates throughout the colony up to the time of our going to press : — Rangitikei Electorate. — The following were the numbers polled at the Feilding booth yesterday for the licensing commit. f c : — W. G. Haybittle, 241 ; H. L. Sherwill, 226 ; A. Mcßeth, 211 ; A. Simpson, 198; R. J. Smith, 185 ; D. Ooughlin, 179 j E. H Humphrey, 144 ; E. McGregor, 143 ;A. E. Remington, 123. Marton Booth- Mcßeth, 228 ; McGregor, 220 ; Remington, 212; Sherwill, 202; Humphrey, 201; Haybittle, 198; Hmitb, 184; Simpson, 181; Coughlin, 178. The poll resulted as follows : —Sherwill, 963 ; Hay tittle, 961 ; Smith, 888 ; impson, 877 ; Mcßeth, 843 ; Coughlin, 839 ; McGregor, 809 ; Remington, 752; Humphrey, 704. The first six are moderate, and the others are independent. The votes with respect to publican's licenses at the Feilding booth were : — That they continue as at present, 164 ; that they be reduced, 24 ; that no licenses be granted, 115. With respect to accommodation licenses : — That they remain as at present, 163 ; that they be reduced, 13 ; that no licenses be granted, 119. With respect to bottle licenses : — That they remain as at present, 146 ; that they be reduced, 21 ; that no licenses be granted, 123. The number of informal votes recorded was 62. The result of the local option poll has not yet been dec!ared,Jbut it will oe invalid, the requisite number of Totes not having been polled Otaki Electorate — Campbelltown : Polling results— That licenses continue, 11 ; that they be reduced, 2; that they be abolished, 50.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Dunkdin, March 21. At the Taieri licensing elections the Temperance candidates have a substantial majority. • The following were elected: — Allen. Rev. Will, Chisholm, Shand, Murdoch, Drakeley, Feltbam and Ross. The locnl option poll at the Taieri will be ineffective, half not recording their votes. Auckland, March 21. In the Parnell electorate 522 vo'ed, but 1855 were required to make a poll, consequently the poll was null. The informal votes numbered 125. The city of Auckland licensing polling resulted in a total of 2068 votes being recorded out of 15,121 on the roll. It required 7500 to make a poll, consequently the poll is void. There were no cabs employed or any excitement. Numbers refrained from voting as they considered tbe Act unworkable. Delegates of the W.C.T. U. distributed leaflets at the polling booths. In the city there were 238 informal votes. Wellington, Maroh 21. The licensing election for Wairarapa took place yesterday with the following results, the first eight being elected ; Donald 1465, Fairbrother 961, Bunny 888, Stevens 885, Considini 874, Miller 858, Proctor 849, Grace 848, Deller, 843, Bright 832, Hiller 829, Han is 815, Dudding 788, Burt 769, Wood 767, Heagerty 456 The votes for publicans licenses to remain as at present were 729, for reduction 183, to abolish 706. Masterton, March 21. The Wairarapa licensing election resulted in the return of five prohibitionists and three moderates. The majority polled in favor of no license, but the poll is apparently void as not containing half the electors on the roll. The final scrutiny is not yet completed. Nbw Plymouth, March 21. The result of the polling for the New Plymouth district is as follows : —To remain as at present, 1128 ; for reduction, 75 1 Prohibition, 741. The returns from four polling places are to come in. I tx f they cannot affect the result. The returns for the election ol a Committee are not yet made up. jNelson, This Day. The anti-prohibitionists carried 8 candidates by large majorities. The highest prohibitionist was 268 below the lowest anti-prohibitionist. The local option poll will not be known till late to-day. Woodtillb, This Day, At tbe Woodville booth the polling was two for prohibition to one for the present number of licenses. Timaru, This Day, A moderate committee was returned by majorities of 400 and upwards. The local option voting was — Continues, 1559 ; to reduce, 086 ; no licenses, 863. Wellington, This Day The following are the results : — Van Stavern, 4656 ; McKenzie, 4652 ; Yogel, 4845 ; Mills, 4267 ; Young, 4262 ; Harcourt,4l99; Clere, 4179; Smith, 4129. The rest are close, and at the scrutiny on Tuesday there may be an alteration made. There were over a thousand informal votes, mostly women. The Committee contains five moderates and three temperance men. Local option — Continues, .581; reduction, 1286; no licenses, 8397 ; total in favour of reduction, 1099. In Waipawa and Wairarapa and districts a reduction of licenses bave been carried. The following outside results have come to hand : — Christchurch - Present licenses, 1347 ; reduction, 834 ; prohibition, 2621 ; two returns to come. Dunedin — The majority for prohibition is expected to be short by 300. Blenheim - The voting is thought to bo for licenses to remain as at present. Lyttelton — A reduction has been carried. Port Chalmers — A temperance committee was elected, bnt the majority is short for prohibition by 50. Invercargill It is believed the prohibition vote is large. Napier — Six moderate and two temperance candidates have been returned. The local option poll is not yet available. Gisborne.— The Waiapu election votes were about 600 short to carry local option. The election of a strong temperance committee is assured. Auckland — The Manukau election is void.
