Imprisonment for Debt.

Imprisonment for debt, wo have long been solemnly assured, is abolished. Yet I have just received a Parliamentary return headed " Imprisonment for debt : return showing the number of orders for committal made in each Provincial District by Resident Magistrates and Justices of the Peace respectively." This return, called for by Mr Earnshaw on July 13th. 1893, supplies the desired information, I presume, up to and for the end of tbe of ficial j ear 1892. In the year 1892 no less than 749 persons were imprisoned for debt, as the subjoined table will show : — 148 ..'. ... Auckland 59 Canterbury 114 Hawke's Bay 8 Marlborough 23 ... ... Nelson 144 Otttgo 30 Taranaki 204 Wellington 14 Westland It is consequently a legal lie to state that imprisonment for debt has been abolished, though I am perfectly aware that they call it Imprisonment for Contempt of Court. But the Parliamentary return alluded to tells the truth, as it uses the words " Imprisonment for debt."— Truth.
