Colonel Maxwell's column, which has been operating against the Abors tribesmen, was compelled to retreat after two clays' hard fighting. A band of thirty rifles, under British officers, was cut to pieces by the rebels while marching to the relief of the detachment which was defeated by the natives at Borlax some days ago. March 11. It is feared that Colonel Maxwell's expedition, which consists of 400 men, is in a critical position, communication by the various routes being stopped. The news that n. native detachment had been massacred by the rebels is confirmed.
