The Frisco Mail will be sorted into private boxes by 9 p.m. this eveniug. There was an unusually heavy downfall of rain yesterday morning in Palmerston North. Additions are made to-day to the entries for Mr Carr's Feildiug and Birmingham stock sales. A meeting of the Directors of the I Feildiug Permanent Building Society will be held at the office of the manager Mr E. Goodbehere, to-morrow afternoon. At the tennis courts on Saturday afternoon A. C. Matheson (30) beat Rev Innis .Jones (35) 80-70, in a heat of the Gent's Handicap Singles. In tlie Ladies' Champion Singles, Miss A. 11. Fry beat Eiss Fry 50-38. The proprietor of tlie Central Firewood Depot, Bowen street, Feilding, Mr C. O. Fiscner, notifies he is prepared to deliver to any part of the town all descriptions of well seasoned firewood. Mr Charles Carr has been favored with instructions from Mr H J. Lloyd of Awahuri, to sell by public auction at his residence all his furniture and effects as detailed in the advertisement. At the last meeting of the Wellington Land Board a number of small village sections, including several at Bunnythorpe and Hunterville, were scheduled for sale at an early date. A few days since a local angler caught eight fine trout in the Oroua river, aggregating twenty lbs weight ; One was a'fine fish of five lbs weight. This is the best basket of fish ever caught in the Oroua River. In addition to their usual stock sale which is to beheld in Sandon to-morrow Messrs Gorton aud Son will sell the privileges in connection with the meeting of the Sandon Hack Race Club, which takes place on the 17th inst. In Tasmania the other day Mr Maurice Wilson, a farmer, was driving a reaping machine. His sou two years old was .standing Amongst the crops unknown to him and the machine cut both the child's legs oft". The little fellow died the next day. A virulent kind of small-pox is reported to be raging in Hangchow. IH per cent,, of those attacked having died. The majority of the victims were infants and young children, aud the doctors are said to be in great despair at beiug unable to effectually deal with the epidemic. On Saturday last a valuable load of crested dogstail grass seed was carted into Feildiug by Mr J. Stewart, of Colyton, for Mr E. T. Harrison, of the Wanganui Harbor Board Block. It repre- ' sented in value nearly £300, being two : ton's weight.
We have to acknowledge receipt from the Government printer of No XIV of the Crown Lands guide. The postmaster made an official visit to Fowlers, Pemberton, Apiti, and Rangiwahia ou Saturday, a journey of about 100 miles. Notice is given in another column that the Oddfellows' Social and Dance will be beld in the Foresters' Hall on Friday evening next, commencing at 8 o'clock. Mr W. Watts, builder, made a commencement tbis morning with the new shop and dwellingjiouse to be erected for Mr S. Svendsen next to bis present shop. Property at Pohangina still continues to change bands. Messrs Hickman Bros, have sold their section to Mr Philpot, of the Harbor Board Block. The new owner has already had a quantity of bush felled and intends shortly to let contracts for fencing. Men of Mr Philpot's stamp are much needed in these parts. In tho opening match of the Rifle Association at Hillsborough Sergeant Saywell's name was omitted from our telegraphic report of the winners of the £2 prizes. Tliis is Sergeant Saywell's first visit to tho New Zealand meeting and we are glad to hear of his winning in his first match. On Saturday Jast there was shown in the shop window of Mr G. W. Fowles, a vine, grown by his brother Frank, which although only planted a year ago, was well grown, and had pendant oh it three splendid bunches of purple grapes. The vine was in a large flower pot, and had ! been developed in a hot-house. It is announced to-day by Mr F. G. Woollanis, pharmaceutical chemist, that he has commenced business in Manchester street, in premises next door to the New Zealand Clothing Factory, and he solicits a share of public patronage. It is the intention of Mr Woollams to keep a full stock of the purest drugs. In reply to a requisition from the carpenters of Palmerston North asking to have the new Courthouse there built on the co-operative principle, the Premier has referred the matter to the Departmental officers for favorable consideration, and if the reply is satisfactory the work will be done on the co-operative system. The " Tenterfield Star" thus : — A revolver has been received at this office. It has been sent us by a mau who cannot pay bis account, and who, doubtless, means it to discbarge his liabilities. It is really a tine revolver. We intend turning our senior reporter loose among bad pays with it next quarter, and after a season amongst them be will proceed to Singleton in quest of the poet who lives iv the " Argus" office. Mr F. Richards, of Pohangina, has just had about 70 acres of bush felled with | the intention of burning iv April. This is rather risky ; for the chance of burning at any time after now is never certain. Last year ho had a number of acres fell iv Marcb, and burnt it the following month with satisfactory results ; the only advantage he gains is tliat with late falling aud late burning tho thistles are avoided the following spring. The sacred concert whicii was given by the Blind Students yesterday afternoon proved, as was expected, most enjoyable. The Assembly Rooms were packed with an appreciative audience, and the various vocal and instrumental selections, which were given with much taste, were listened to with rapt attentiou, and many were tho expressions of surprise and pleasure at the capable manner in whicii the performers acquitted themselves. Anderson' £1 19s, Trimming and metalling 140 chains Stanway road, at per chain. — F. L. Behrent, £1 13s 9d (accepted conditionally) ; O. Mcllroy, £1 17s 4d ; J. Anderson, £1 17s 4d ; P. Regan, £2 ; J. Dwyer, £1 17s 6d ; J. Goodwin, £2 lis; Dudson Bros., £1 14s; T. Young, £2 5s 6d ; P. Cronin, £2 3s 9d. The tenders for Paschke's road were not accepted.
