The Wool Market.
The London agents of the Colonial Bank report under date January 19th : The first of the six series of Colonial wool sales for tbe present year opened here on the 16th inst., with a net available quantity of about 270,000 bales (including 22,000 bales old stock held over from last series). Of the total New Zealand has 26,800 bales, including 2,600 bales old stock. The sales opened with a good attendance from all quarters but strongest of Home buyers, and competition was fairly active. Prices for all classes of Australasian merinos opened o-i a par with December auction currency. Tbe demand for the few crossbreds offered lias been firmer than last sales at hardening values, but thus far without quotable increase in price. As at first arranged, the series was to close on 3rd proximo, but inasmuch as several vessels not expected to arrive in time were reported a few hours before the list closed, thereby increasing the total about 25 per cent on 30,000 bales, it has been decided to extend the series till Oth February.
