MR GLADSTONES JRESIGNATION.
(l'EIl PRESS ASSOCIATION.) 1 London. Febrnary 27. The Hon. G. W. Spencer Lyttelton, \ private secretary to Mr Gladstone, declares the statements that the Prime i Minister intends shortly to resign are unauthorised, but he refuses to give the reports a direot denial. February 28. The Daily News is authorised to give a denial to the report that Mr Gladstone has resigned. •*ince Mr Gladstone's telegram from Biarritz, in which he said he recognised that his tenure of office was liable to be interrupted at any time, the conviction has been general that the Prime Minister's term of office will now be brief. The policy of Lord Eosebery, who is expected to succeed to the Premiership, will, it is reported, be in the direction of taking away the power of veto from the House of Lords. The majority of the Cabinet are ' averse to a dissolution at the present time. ' St. James 1 Gazette says the date of ' Mr Gladstone's retirement is not yet fixed, and it depends upon whether the \ operation is to be performed on bis , eyes at an early date succeeds. The Radical newspapers are fiercely disputing the question of who is to be \ his successor.
