Concert at Colyton.
A most successful concert was held in the Hall at Colyton last night. The object was to render a little aid to Mr Cornwall, who, some time back, was so unfortunate as to get his leg broken. The result of the concert is estimated to approach £10, and on this the promoters are to be congratulated. The programme was long and good. There were many strangers on the stage who seemed very quickly to establish themselves as favourites. The concert opened with a pretilly played overture by Miss Garlick ; Miss Shortall followed with M Love's golden dream." Mr Porter then sang w The old folks at home," with banjo accompaniment, and he had to respond to an encore. Mrs Thornby then very sweetly sang "In old Madrid." A Scotch song by Mr Brown was the next item, and then JMrs Mairs sang 11 Waiting.' An imperative encore was responded to very sweetly by a pretty little triile, and then Mr Mairs brought down the house with " Right before the Missus." The last verse had to be repeated, Miss Pleasants then sang " We had better bide a wee," and was accorded hearty applause " The officer's funeral," by Mr Pearce, was the next song, and then Mrs Thornby sing v Tell me my heart," and in response to au encore repeated the last verse. Mrs Mairs sang next and was again encored, repeating the last verse. The last item on the first part of the programme then followed in the shape of a truly laughable account, which Mr Mairs sang, of a little merriment indulged in by four and twenty kindred spirits. After the interval a real bush scene was staged. This was arranged by Mr Thomas Sexton, of Ashurst, and did him infinite credit. The parts were taken by himself, Messrs Owen Pleasants, Woodleigb, and E., and W., Cornwall. The dancing of the latter, as well as that of " a friend " introduced by Mr Woodleigh, was much appreciated. Mr Pleasants sang well, and Mr Sexton was very successful in two powerful recitations, composed by himself. The accompaniments were played by Miss Shortall during the, first part, and by,. Miss Violet Pleasants during the second. A vote -of thanks to the performers terminated the concert.
