To-day Mr Charles Bray, juuior, was uominatcd for the vacancy of the Borough Council. We regret to learn that a third child of Mr John P. Lethbridge (of Bonny Glen) is suffering from diphtheria. Two tenders wort; received for tbe erection of the Church at Apiti viz. from Mr W. Ranks and Mr. l. Buokmau. That of the latter was accepted. On Wednesday evening next a short Lenten service will be bold in St John's Church, at 7 o'clock, which will be conducted by the Bey Innes Jones. The " Bed Stars " are requested to roll up at 7 o'clock sharp to-night, at Mr F. Bray's hairdressing saloon, to make arrangements for starting the club. The famous Lynch Family of bellringers, vocalists, humourists, etc.. will give oue of their famous performances in the Assembly Booms this evening. Owing to pressure ou our space the report of the proceedings at the Pohangina Road Board's meeting, held on Saturday last, is unavoidably held over till to-mor-row's issue. On dit that an attempt will be made to form the Pohangina Hoad District into a county so as to extend the borrowing j lowers of the ratepayers and thus j enable them to raise money to make roads. Another phase of the unemployed question. According to Canou P'arrar, about 1000 clergymen of tho Church of England are out of omplovinc ut. Another writer j declares that about au equal number are miserably underpaid. We greatly regret to hear that Judge ] Ward's illness still continues, and that it ! is of a really serious character. We hope soon to learn that favourabie symptoms have set in, and that the genial judge is in a fair way to take up liis official duties I agaiu. In connection with the recent action against the Railway Commissioners at Pulmerston. if it is proved that private level crossings are level crossings under tho Act, the Government rules will require to be allorod, aud trains must whistle on approaching each crossing. We have to acknowledge receipt of the first number of " The Christian outlook " a family paper with which is incorporated the New Zealand Presbyter- ! ian. It is well edited ; and beautifully printed by the proprietors, Messrs Wilkie and Co., of Dunedin. On Sunday afternoon next a children's Flower Service will be held in St John's Church, at a quarter past three o'clock. Contributions of fruit and flowers will be thankfully received at the Church School room on Saturday, the best of which will be torwarded to the Palmerston North District Hospital ou Monday morning. The Standard says : — " The Premier thinks the Foxton residents are an excessively contented people, for during his visit there he was not asked to receive a single deputation or consider a request. He was no doubt most agreeably surprised." The Foxton peoplo are wise iv their generation. Tho Government aie fully resolved to enforce tho Dairy Industry Act, and for the future every shipment of butter will bo inspected before it leave- tho Colony. Mr Sawers lias been engaged this week in inspiring the Ru.hiiiu's shipment at Wellington. Ho found that a good many consig iincuts were not in accordance with the requirements of the Act, and a numbor of informations are theiefore about to be laid agumst offundiujj shippers. On Saturday evening last Bernard's circus company performed to a very good audience-, all the sitting space being occupied. Those present seemed to be well please 1 with the clever feats, and the Japanese tumblers were frequently applauded. A paper fan that could be made into a variety of ornamental and uuiquo representations, was exhibited, aud the dog race with monkeys as jockeys, amused the younger portiou of the audience. Association has resulted iv a law suit, in which Mr Baker sought to recover t"10l), being value of prices alleged to have been wrongfully awarded to a horse belonging to another exhibitor, and damages tor disqualification, which debarred plaintiff from showing any of his stock at the A. and P. Shows during the pleasure of the committee. The case came up lor hearing on Saturday, and after considerable evidence had been taken His Honor decided to reserve judgment. The following tenders were received by the Kiwitea Road Board on Saturday last : — Pakihikura Village reserve road, F.
