Waituna Notes.

L_'HOM OUR OWN COKUESrOXDEV-.J The Waituna Cricket Club played tbeir first match on Wednesday against Halcombe, and I hear, had decidedly the best of the game, when tbe stumps where drawn, this is a very good start, for a club tbat was not in existance at tbe commencement of the year. Mi Northcott has kindly allowed tbe club tbe use of bis front paddock for practice, which is a very convenient spot. Messrs Gorton and Son's last stock sale at Waituna was largely attended, and notwithstanding the drop in prices, tbe Colonel sold about 4000 sheep, besides cattle and horses. At the request of settlers, he is going to hold another on the 7th of March. To show tbe progress tbat is being made in cultivating tbe farms in this district, I may mention that Mr Godfrey's manager bad 30 acres of oats cut with a reaper and binder tbis year, wbich is I believe the first so cut within miles of us. Stoats are going to make game scarce here, oue settler found the remains of three bares ou a ten acre paddock tbis summer. A peculiar and painful accident occurred to Mr Irevin, tbe other week. He was engaged cutting thistles on the edge of some fallen bush on his farm at Apiti, by some means one of them struck him in the eye. He came home, but tbe eye got so bad he had to s c Dr Sorley who advised bim to go to Wellington for a specialist's treatment. A letter received from bim lately stated tbe eye was a little better. Most of the settlers about here, who had bush to burn, have secured fair results, although some of them, might have been improved upon.
