Kiwitea Road Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held in their office, Feilding, on Saturday last. Present — Messrs Williamson, (chairman), Beid, Morton, Jones, Homer, and Taylor. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read as follows : From E. Sandeman, solicitor for Mr Birch, of Birmingham, drawing the Board's attention to the culvert across Kimbolton road,|alleging it brought the water on to his client's section. From H. John, Birmingham, re noncompletion of road work by contractors. From F. B. Mcßeth (Kiwitea) and C.E.Nicholas (Bulls) forwarding their accounts for bushfelling. From D. H. Guthrie, applying for refund of nine month's rates overp aid. Tbe rates for one year had been paid on section 7, Hautapu, whereas tiie owner had not possession of the section for nine months of that {time. — It was decided the Board could not agree to tbe request. From E. Marshall, J. Harris, J. Hyde, A. H. Tompkins, and John Stevenson, re change of names on rate roll. From A. H. Tompkins, a reply to letter re rates due by Mrs Everiss. From Commissioner of Taxes, informing the Board a voucher for A_s_o 17s 6d, a subsidy advance to the Board, had been sent to the Treasury. From S. FitzHerbert, attorney for C. Bill, re road through property known as Buchanan and Levett's, and stating the Board would be expected to pay all expenses of transfer. From Under-secretary Department of Lands, Wellington, re letter and petition, dated October 28th, 1893, to Minister of Lands, asking for a contribution to cost of maintenance of road between Birmingham and Pemberton. The reply stated there were no fuuds available for such work. With regard (to the statement that a promise had been made by the then Minister of Lands that if 2s 6d per acre with which the land was loaded for the purpose of constructing roads in the Block was not sufficient for the formation of such roads tbe Government would construct the whole of the roads in the Block, but that the Government did not carry out its promise, tbe UnderSecretary stated that he was unable to find any record of any such promise having been made, and the (Commissioner of Crown Lands on being consulted on the subject stated he never heard of such a promise. From the Treasury, re _?466 2s interest due on loans and asking the amount be paid to public account at the Bank of New Zealand, Feilding. At 12 o'clock the Board adjourned until 2 o'clock. On resuming MrPoweU was present. Mr T. D. Wood waited on the Board to present a petition, signed by nine settlers on the Mangoira road, asking the Board not to raise tlie loan of .£1892 10s, as advertised. — He was informed the settlers could object to any proposals at the meeting which would be held at Pemberton on a date to be advertised. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Jones, That the matter referred to by Mr Sandeman be left with tlie Engineer to deal with. —Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Jones, That the following alterations in the rate roU be made viz:— James Hyde in place of John G. Harris for section 38, (Birmingham), Block XHI, Apiti; S. Morgan in place of Edwin Marshall for section 9, Block, Apiti; A. H. Tompkins in place of Mr Everiss, for section 8, Block Xn, Ongo; John Stevenson for section 11, Block V, Apiti ; F. Carthew's name for section 16, Block, VHI, Ongo ; J. W. Jenkins and W. H. Jenkins in place of G. C. Cameron for section 20, Block XII, Ongo. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Powell, seconded by Mr Morton, That the Engineer be instructed to lay off the work and caU tenders for the same for the balance of the loan in the Ongo ward.— Carried. Proposed by Mr PoweU, seconded by Mr Morton, That Mr Palmer's offer to clear the Tapuae road, 46 chains, 16ft wide, for £8 as per his proposal be accepted. . . . Carried. Proposed by Mr Powell, seconded by Mr Morton, That tenders be called for clearing the Kiwitea- Tapuae road from the end of present track as far as the " thirds " in hand will go.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by | Mr Williamson, That the Engineer be instructed to complete McDermott's contract on the Oroua Valley road be* fore the next meeting of the Board.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Reid, seconded by Mr Morton that the request of Mr H. Stent be agreed to re leasing the reserve on the corner of his section on the Board's usual terms. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reid, seconded by Mr Morton, That the following teuders be accepted:— Pakihikura Village Reserve roads F. Marsh £294, and that fresh tenders be called for the road leading to the Vinegar Hill bridge site.— Cai ried § Proposed by Mr PoweU. seconded by Mr Morton, That the meeting of ratepayers re Ongo loan be held at Waituna store on March sth at 10 a.m. That the poll be taken on March — at the following places: — The Waituna store, Mr Deusham's house, Mr Wilson's house, Kiwitea- Tapuae road, aud Kiwitea Road Board office, Feilding. — Carried. 1 .-oposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Williamson, That a meeting be held at the Town Hall, Birmingham, on Mouday, the 26th inst., at 11 a.m., to consider the different proposals to bor. row various sums for works in the Birmingham and Apiti Blocks as advertised, and that the meeting to consider tie Pemberton proposals be held at the Pemberton school house on Saturday the 24th inst. at 11 a.m. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Reid, seconded by Mr Williamson, Tbat a public meeting to consider loan proposals in Pakihikura Block be held on Saturday February 24th, at A. H. Atkinson's house at noon aud that a poll be takeu for same on Saturday March 3rd, at the same place. The usual monthly accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
