A MAN BURNED TO DEATH. !Pe« Press Association.] Sydney, February 7 The Retrenchment Party intend to press on the Government to further reduce the; salaries of Civil servauts— reductions of 5 per cent to be made in salaries between .£3OO and .£6OO, 10 per cent in salaries between £500 and £700, 15 per cens in those between £700 and .£IOOO, and 20 per cent in all salaries above £1000. If the Government does not accept this proposal, the party intend to take a test vote on the question, and if they are unsuccessful in this direction, then they will tight the Estimates item by item. This Day. The efforts of the Retrenchment Party in challenging salaries were futile and the reductions were rejected by a large majority. A letter received at Albany from New Australia states that many of the settlers are without shoes and in rags. There are no ploughs and men are digging with spades. It reports that a split lias occurred among the settlers who are now divided into two parties. Melboubne, February 7 Havoc has been scratched for the Newmarket Handicap. This Day. A boarding house in Flinders street was burned down last night. One inmate named Cole was burned to death, while five others were seriously injured in effecting their escape. The Agricultural Department is sending a trial shipment of poultry to London. Brisbane, This Day. The Queensland Deposit Bank has issued a circular announcing its inability to carry out the reconstruction scheme agreed upon by the depositors in February last, and asks for an extension of time. The names of the missing men of the steamer K;uiahooka are Bradley, chief officer ; Priestly, second officer ; Archer, third officer; Sterling, third engineer; Moran, steward ; Johnson, Cheshire, Bishop, and McFee, seamen. Three tires have occurred recently on the British-India Company's steamers giving ground for suspecting incendiarism. The Company are applying to the Government for a searclung enquiry into the fire on board the Dorunda. Adelaide, This Day The master bakers and employes have established a Conciliation Board consisting of five from each side. The Board is to settle all future disputes. j Dr. Cockburn and Mr Todd, Superintendent of Telegraphs, will represent the Colony at the Postal Conference in Wellington.
