At the inquest held to-day touching the death of William Jones, who was found dead in his whare on Monday even* in?, a verdict was returned of death from natural causes, in accordance with the doctor's testimony. . Auckland, February 6. Albert Schliuter brought up his wife, Margaret Schlinter, at Huntly, to endeavor to compel her to maintain him, on the ground that he was destitute and unable to earn his own living. The Magistrate, after hearing the evidence, dismissed the case. At the annual meeting of the share* holders of Sharland and Co , Limited, the report stated that after writing off bad debts, depreciation of plant, and £1,000 from patent and proprietary rights, there remains £2,489 95,, from which the Directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 8 per cent,, absorbing £2,389, leaving a balance of £'100 to be carried forward. The Bay of Islands Coal Company is to be wound up. The body of an infant was reported floating off Shelly Beach, but proved when the water-police made a search to be a large rag doll. The Auckland Gas Company has declared a dividend at the rate of 9 per cent per annum for the half-year. Masterton, February 6. Mr John Drummond, late Chief Inspector of Stock in the Wairarapa, but now removed to the Hawke's Bay district, was presented to-day with an influenti* ally signed testimonial and a parse of 100 soys as a mark of esteem from the settlers of the Wairarapa. The presentation was made by Mr W. C. Buchanan M HR. Dunedin, February 6. Mr. Bull, Stock Inspector, has arranged to have a paddock of wheat in the Tokonjairiro district reserved wherein to liber ate the natural enemy of the Hessian fly, to arrive by the Gothic. Wellington, February 6. The Kilbimie Council object to Lvell's Bay being made the outiet of the Wellington drainage scheme, in the belief that a nuisance will be caused by venti lators of the outfall sewer. A resolution was passed instructing their solicitor to take steps to prevent the city from injuring the district by taking the sewerage through it. Christchttrch, February 6. At a meeting of the New Zealand Bands Association, it was decided to postpone the election of a judge for the Inverqargill competition till the meeting in Dunedin next month. Efforts are being made to increase the number of associated bands.
