A MAN WASHED OVERBOARD AND DROWNED. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.} Wellington, February 5. H.M.S. Lizard, which arrived from ! Milford Sound this afternoon, cn v ! countered the full force of the north east gale on Friday afternoon. At 4 p.m. when the gale was at its height, a heavy sea broke aboard, washing two men — W. Tucker, L.S., and A. Street, A.B.— off the bow- . sprit. Measures were at once taken to save them, but Tucker sank before help could be given. A life buoy was thrown to Street, who is a powerful swimmer. He was unable to grasp it, but managed to secure a lead line, and was hauled on board in almost the last stages of exhaustion. Three other seamen were washed on to the upper deck and narrowly escaped going overboard, while a large boat was carried away. At the time of the accident, the vessel was about 18 miles south west of Cape Foulwind. The gale continued with unabated force, and > at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning a large whaleboat disappearedoverboavd. From 8 a.m. the vessel was hove to for several hours, but the weather moderating she proceeded on her course. Tucker was a native of Devonshire, was 24 years old, and had been about seven * years in the Navy. Considerable damage was done i to the deck gear.
