Mr Fred Piram, M.H.R., lor Palmerston, waited on the Minister of Lands, at the railway station yesterday to present a petition signed by eighty residents of Apiti, asking {or assistance towards constructing a bridge across the Oroua river on the road between Birmingham and Apiti. Mr Pirani, in asking that a sum be placed on the estimates next session for the work, pointed out that the residents had lately spent £4000 in roading the district, involving something like 3d in the £ in special rates, and as these roads benefitted a large area of Crown lands now being opened up, petitioners thought they could fairly claim the aid of Government to the extent of building the bridge in question, the cost of which would not exceed £1,800. Mr McKenzie replied that he would go into the matter carefully with the engineer, and would acquaint the member for the district with the result of the deliberation of the Cabinet on the request. — Standard;
