Chevoit Estate.
The Lytteltou Times gives the following particulars :— " The total area lsased this month was 10.791 acres, and the annual reutal will amount to £2948 j 10s. Wo can now form sonic idea of the probable financial results of this very interesting experiment. The estate contains 79,914 acres, and was bought by the Government for !"260.220. Up to the present 6365 acres have been sold for cash, realising .£83,61>H, and J 27,312 acres have been leased at an annual reutal of 17140. The capital f value of the land leased or sold is £'176,417, and 46,237 acres remain for c disposal. If we deduct the capital value £ of the land already dealt with from the , original cost of the estate we have a | balance of i-33,803. Against this the ] Crown holds 46,237 acres of land, which are worth, at the very lowest estimate. £3 au acre. This gives a total of n £138,711, so that after deducting the J balance of the original cost we have at least a sum of .1*54,908 to cover all the expenses incidental to the acquisition and settlement of the property. With these figures before us wo are iuclined to think that the Government will have no cause to regret the bold step it took a j'ear ago." j
