FOXTON RACES. [By Our Special Reporter.] The Anniversary meeting of the above •was held on the Club's pretty little course at Foxton yesterday. We think Mr J. R. McMillan, the popular secretary must have made a compact with Captain Edwin to give him, what in sporting parlance is known as " the straight griffin " in exchange for a line day, for more i delightful weather couM not have been j wished for, a nice breeze tempering the heat. The sporting public took full advantage of the pleasant day's outing, there being about 1200 present, fully half of whom journeyed down by the Wanganni ti'ain. The course was iv splendid going order, the sand having been topdressed and sown down in English grass. The appointments to the course have also been improved and the arrangements under the able management of the genial and obliging Secretary were all that could be desired. Very fair fields faced the starter in most of tho races, but the favourites got home in nearly every case, and small dividends were the order of the day, the only one of any magnitude being .A' 9 18s o:; Strayshot in the Steward's Stakes. The starting iv one or two instances was not all that could be desired, and after the second race, a meeting of the stewards was held to consider a protest made by the horse owners against the starter, but the officials decided not to make any change for the day.
