AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON. (PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION) Wkllington, Janusry 11. The match between Auckland and Wellington was finished to day, and resulted in favor of the visitors by one wicket after a game full of mci dent. The Wellington men made 131 in their second innings. Auckland, with 144 to get to win, made a b-.\d start, six wickets being down for 59 runs. Eight wickets were down for 100, when a remarkable thing occurred, which gained the victory for Auckland. Lawson hit Ashbolt high to equare leg. Gore, who was standing at the boundary, stopped the ball, but did not take it clean. At the second attempt he secured in, but in doing so stepped or leaned over the boundary rope. Lawson loft the wicket, thinking he was caught, aud Holle, the last man, went it, but the point was raised that the ball, having crossed the boundary, though in the fieldsman's hands, Lawson was not out. The Wellington umpire allowed the appeal, and ordered six to be recorded for the hit. The decision was much questioned, and it is stated, according to English precedence, Liiwson was out. The Auckland umpire, it was ascertained afterwards, would have decided against him. Probably the point will be referred to the Marylebone Club. After this Lawson bit out smartly, and the score was increased by more than thirty runs before he was ultimately caught for 25. When Holle again appeared only 12 runs were wanted to tie and these were obtained amid great excitement. Neill carried his bat for 32, and undoubtedly both by his bowling and battiog won the match for his side.
