A large lire in the General Post Office destroyed the instrument fitting room and damaged the dead letter and parcel post branch. The amount of the damage is not yet ascertained. Some very valuable instruments were lost. The Bank results for the past quarter show deposits amount to £321,184,000 against £3o,94;),000 for the previous quarter; advances £45,942,000 against £47,702,000. Coin and bullion £8,245,---000 against £8,031,000.
