The Chess Congress.

[per pbess association.! Dunkdin, January 4. Great interest was taken in the game at the Chess Congress between Edwards and Hookham, as the wiuner must be champion and the loser unplaced, while the draw would result in Barnes being champion. Edwards had first move and led off with the only opening he has adopted during the Congress, the Zukertort. A very exciting game resulted. At several points of the game .Hookham had the advantage, which Edwards afterwards succeededin neutralising. After several hours play, Hookham moved his king to 86, instead of A 6, thereby losing what must otherwise have been a drawn game. Edwards is thus champion with 7| wins to 2J losses ; Barnes, Brown, and Cleland, won 7 to 3 losses each ; Hookham 6J win*, 2-J losses ; Lelievere G wins, 4 losses ; Barton 5 wins nnd 5 losses ; Mellor 4 wins and 6 losses ; Mouat 3 wins and 7 losses ; Pleasants 2-J wins and 7£ losses ; Smith 1 win and 9 losses. The players were entertained, at a smoke concert by the Dunedin Chess Club.
