COLLISION BETWEEN ENGLISH AND FRENCH TROOPS.
HEAVY CASUALIZES ON BOTH SIDES. (PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Lojvdox. January 6. Telegrams from Sierra Leone, , Western Africa, published in the ' London newspapers, state that the ', French attacked the British camp at Warrena before dawn on the 23rd of December. The British returned the fire and fighting lasted for some time, but eventually the French withdrew. Their commander, Lieutenant Mortz, having been wounded, was brought into camp, where he died. Before his death he explained that he thought the British were a body of (against whom the French are operating) officered by Arab officers. In the fight 10 on the French side were killed. The West Indian Regiment (British) had Lieutenants Liston and Broughton, a sergeant, and four privates killed and 15 seriously wounded. The frontier police had Captain Lendy and two men killed, and three seriously wounded. The British troops remain at Warrena, which is within the British sphere. There wore white troops on both sides as well as natives. Later telegrams state that the British expedition of 600 of the First West India Kegiment and frontier police was despatched from Sierra Leone under Colonel Ellis Troneliene aud Captain Lendy, who were encircled by Sofas at Korauko. Twelve hundred French native troops, with Sengale&e sharpshooters, were also operating against the Sofas. The French Government wore warned of the despatch of the British expedition, but it was not expected that the French expedition would be so far south as to come into contract with the British. It is thought the French opeiations drove the Sofas into the British sphere. The English and French spheres of influence had previously been defined. The English press is awaiting further explanations. Meanwhile comments nro of a temperate character.
