» — An astonishing story of a miscarriage of justice comes from Germauy. It is alleged that twelve years ago a cashier in the office of the Ministry of Finance at Dresden was accused, in consequence of the action of a Committee of Audit, of having embezzled the sum of 5000 marks. The cashier energetically protested that be was innocent, but on the evidence given be was convicted aud sentenced to one year's imprisonment. At the same time he was ordered to make restitution of the money supposed to have been taken. After serving his year's imprisonment, the unhappy man set himself to work to obtain proofs of bis innocence. In this he bad to encounter many obstacles, but at length after eleven years unwearying efforts, he has succeeded in proving that the money was never stolen either by himself or by anyone else. It now appears to be established that the supposed deficit arose from a mistake of the auditors. It is believed tbat the victim of this serious piece of official negligence or incompetence, now in his seventy-fifth year, will receive substantial " compensation " for \ bis unmerited sufferings.
