Birmingham Notes.

[fbom our own cobbbsfondbnt.] Mr John Stevens, M.H.R., was here for a day or two last week making himself personally acquainted with the wants of the district. The opening up of roads and a bridge over the Oroua ri . er were among the chief items impressed on the mind of Mr Stevens by the settlers. The bridge is an actual necessity, as within the past eight months one young man, about twenty-one years of age, just starting work on his section, lost his life while attempting to ford the river, while another settler recently bad a very narrow escape. A friendly cricket match between the Apiti and Birmingham clubs was played here on New Year's Day, and resulted in a win for the latter in the first innings by 77 runs, 41 of which were contributed by Hedges. The scores were — Birmingham 99, Apiti 22. Apiti then had to follow on, but owing the incessant rain play was stopped after the loss of five wickets for 77 runs The highest scorers were— Hyde 15, Dick (not out) 17, and Edney (not out) 15. On New Year's Eve practical jokes of a disgusting and revolting nature were played on our respective townsman Mr Lowes. The larrikin element is growing space here, but the jokes (if one might call them such) were perpetrated by men of mature years who should have shown better sense. The only regret is that it could not be sheeted home to them, but the fact of it being done under cover of darkness makes it a matter of some difficulty, thougii suspicion falls on a few.
