Auckland, January 2. 1 A prisoner named James Aikerigg, a recent arrival from Australia, who was arrested on two charges of petty larceny on the 28th ult., died at Mount Eden gaol on Sunday night. He was about 54 years of age, an Englishman by biifn, and was a wool broker. He arrived six months ago, properly accredited, took to drink, and became destitute. So far as is known, deceased has no relations in New Zealand. Gi-bobnb, January 2. Judge Barton has been appointed Judge of the Validation Court, under the Act of last session to settle disputed titles to native land. Dcnebin, January 2. Mr Waterhouse, former Pre* tmer of the colony, returned with Mrs Waterhouse in the Talune, greatly improved in health. A young man nomod Harry Maitland has lost an eye by a splinter from a cap striking it while out shooting. The doctors found it necessary to remove the eyo. Lyttelton, January 2.
