A LADY MAYORESS.
It is quite evident that tbe ratepayers of the Borough of Onehunga " knew what they were about " when they elected Mrs Yates to the Mayoralty. At a special meeting of the Council tbe Mayoress objected very properly to the presence at the Council table of two Councillors who had resigned their seats as a protest against the appointment of a woman to preside over them. Very weakly, in fact childishly, they asserted their right to remain in office " until their successors were appointed." Tbe Mayor, however, was equal to the occasion, and would not allow Any business to be transacted while these persons remained to vote. The Council was accordingly adjourned until two other, and it is to be hoped more tractable, Councillors are elected. The conduct of Mrs Yates in this trying position is to be commended, and we sincerely hope she will continue to act during her term of office with the same good sense and firmness.
