We are glad to see that every newspaper in the colony has made congratulatory comments on the bright prospects of the New Zealand Loan, and Mercantile Agency Company. We quite agree with those who are of opinion that the resumption of its operations will have a most beneficial effect on commerce generally in the colony. The Wanganui Herald, in an able article on the subject, reminds us that before the suspension of two of the Australian banks, in which large amounts of the money of the company were looked up, its business was sound and remunerative, and its operations had done much towards the settlement of this colony, where the thrifty industrious small farmers had availed themselves very largely of the Company's assistance in improving their holdings and increasing their flocks and herds. Our contemporary further points out that none of its many clients have been embarrassed or screwed up through its temporary suspension, nor are they likely to be when it resumes business in ita own name shortly. Its Directors and General Manager are far too shrewd to follow so suicidal a course as that now being followed by one or two other financial institutions, whose clients are being worried and menaced to reduce their indebtedness at a time when it takes most people all they can do to keep steerage way on, let alone making up any past financial leeway. We join with the Herald in wishing the Company every success in its new departure.
