The Chess Congress.
< w I Per Press Association] Uonedin, Dec. 27. The Chess Congress was continued to-day, with the foUowing results:— Mellor v. Cleland- Cleland won a piece at the eighteenth move, and a dozen moves later on his opponent resigned. Borton v. Mouat— -Borton opened with the Allgnier Gambit, which was accepted. About the twenty-first move Mouat was in difficulties, and beiug called away he exceeded his time limit, the game going to his opponent by default. Brown v. Lelievre— The Giuocco Piano opening was adopted by Lelievre. Ninety-one moves were made in the three hours before lunch, and on resuming it was agreed to draw. Edwards v. Barnes— Edwards played the Sicilian defence. A very oven game followed till about 3.30, when Edwards announced a make in two moves. Hookham v. Pleasants— Hookham adopted the Ruy Lopez opening, and Pleasants replied with the Berlin defence. At the fifteenth move Pleasants lost a piece. Another followed at the twenty-fifth move, and Pleasants resigned. Smith had a bye. •
