Stock Markets.

WAITUNA SALE. Messrs Gorton and Son held their first stock sale at Waituna yesterday. The entries of cattle were large, and those of sheep were moderate. There was a large attendance of settlers from all parts the district, including some from the Pohangina, and the bidding was spirited. Preparatory to commencing the sale, Colonel Gorton expressed the thanks of his firm for the courtesy they had received, and for the promises of support on his first visit to the district. He hoped the sales would result in mutual benefit to all. Tho next sale will be held at Waituna on February 7th next, for which sale farmers are requested to send in early entries.

The firm report as follows : — At Waituna yesterday their first sale was a treat success. The cattle yards were lied with a good class of cattle, for which there was spirited bidding, and all were sold under the hammer, excepting a few cows, at satisfactory prices. Only a moderate number of sheep came forward, on account of the shearing uot being over in that district, but the few pens which were yarded were sold. Our quotations are :— Catfcle-8-year bullocks, M 19s 6d to £5 ; 18-month mixed, £6 Is to £6 6s 6d ; yearlings, £2 2s to £2 18s 6d ; cows and heifers in calf, £9 18s ; mixed, from £4 8s; 21-month steers, £8 12s; milkers, £Q to £6 10s. Sheep— 2-tooth woolly mixed, 12s 8d ; store wethers, 9s 6d; 2-tooth wethers, 8s 5d to 8s 9(1. Horses, £5 to £U 2s 6d.

Messrs Gorfcou and Sou report the following prices at their sale at Marton on Tuesday : -Ewes and lambs, purebred, 11s lOd; 2-tooth mixed, 8s sd; good wethers, 9s 6d ; fat wethers, 9s 9d ; fat ewes, 8s lOd.

The prices realized at F. B. Jackson and Co.'s Johnsonville sale yesterday were as follows : — Cattle— Best bullocks, ±7 10s to Ml 17s 6d ; others, £6 15s to £1 7s 6d. Sheep— Wethers, 10s 6d to 10s 7d ; ewes, 8s to 9s 9d ; lambs, 7s Gd to 8s Id. Pigs— Small baconers, 84s to 48s; porkers, 21s to 275 ; small pigs, 17s Bd.
