Installation of the Mayor.
A meeting of the Borough Council was held at noon to day for the pur- tl pose of installing Councillor Carthew as Mayor for the Borough of Feilding. There were present — the Mayor (Mr E. Goodbehere), Crs. Carthew, Fowlea, Worsfold, and J. C. Thompson. The Mayor stated that the meeting had been called for the purpose of installing the newly-appointed Mayor, but before asking Mr Carthew to sign the declaration he would like to say a few words re the finances of the Borough. With reference as to what had taken place during his tern of office he might say that a considerable amount of money had been expended, and the Council could congratulate itself upon many impoitant works being done. In conclusion, he would thank the Councillors for the very courteous way in which they had treated him, and ho would look back upon his late position with much pleasure, and he hoped the same courteousness would be accorded his successor. He might say that be had attended 26 meetings during his term of office, only being absent from one, which was unavoidable. (Mr Goodbehere's address in full will appear in to morrow's issue.) Cr Thompson referred to the efficient way in which the late Mayor had managed the affairs of the Borough. He had watched him closely, and was sure all would agree that he had been a most efficient chief over them. Cr Gould endorsed Cr Thompson's remarks, and was sure all must have been highly pleased with the thorough business capacities dreplayed by their retiring Mayor, and trusted that the j same policy and same charitable spirit ' would be continued by his successor. Burgesses had every reason to be proud of men so willing to devote their time and money to the affairs of the Borough. Cr W. Carthew, having taken the Mayoral chair, and signed the declaration by which he was installed as Mayor, said that he was sure the statements mnde by th elate Mayor were very satisfactory indeed. He thought that the new works" and maintenances should be carried out with the strictest economy, and endeavors be made to reduce the overdraft. Reference was made to several important works which he hoped would be carried out during the coming year. He would like to see footpaths formed of concrete or asphalt, which would do aw«y with the expense of continually keeping them clear of weeds, etc. He thought the drainage scheme should be kept in abeyance for a time, and that the Council should devote £100 111 endeavoring to obtain an artesian water supply. He was positive it would be a success, and water could be conveyed all over the town tho same as if it wereobtained from a a higher source. There were various other matters of importance which he hoped would not be lost sight of by Councillors, to which he shortly referred. In conclusion he thought he need scarcely ask councillors to extend the same courtesy to him as had been given the late Mayor, as he was sure they would do so. Cr Gould would like to congratulate the newly appointed Mayor, on the position whish he had attained, he might well feel proud of it, and he was sure that during his term of office the same good feeling would exist between him (the Mayor) and Councillors as had in the past. A few unimportant items of business were attended to when it was resolved, on the proposition of Cr Worsfold, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the Borough offices be closed from the 22nd December, 1893, until 2nd January, 1894. — Carried. The Council then adjourned.
