"Laftweek, sir." Only seven of the Feilding team were able to get away to-day to finish the Cup match with Marton. Feilding has one innings to play, and Marton has two wickets of the second innings to fall with 97 runs to the good. Messrs. Davy and Milts, of the Red House, have a largo stock of preserved fruits, currants, raisins, and all kinds of groceries on hand for the Christmas trade. Crockery, ohmaware, and electro-plated goods are also in great variety and the most fastidious should be satisfied with the selection, Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., has written a letter to the Minister of Lands, protest ing against the proposal to devote 1,000 acres of the 1,500 recently purchased from the Natives to a State farm, as an injustice to those who have been waiting for a considerable time to purchase sections in the block. A tennis match, six players aside, will be played on the local ground on Saturday afternoon next, between the Palmers ton and Feilding club?, The match will include singles and doubles, aud all probable players arc requested to attend the practice every evening to play off heats m order that a team may be selected. Although Mr T. O. Collins " Curiosity Shop '' is well stocked with articles of every conceivable kind, ho has today received a furthor consignment of fifteeu cases, containing goods suitablo for the Chiistmas season, and 'when theso are opened up his store should present an ex» ceptionally attractive appearance. Tbe Bunny thorpe correspondent of the ManawatuTimoo writes :— The Pbcotiix Fire Office is to bo complimented upon Us promptitude in settlement of claims against it. Tho property of Mrs Russell's, which was recently destroyed by fire, was insured in this office, and within a week the insurance money was handed over to tbe insurer. As will be seen on reference to the advertisement of Mr F. Gabites, Fergusson street, he has now on view a shipment of drapery, milhnery&c,inc!udingcrotonne9, serges, embroidorod robes, girls' hose and numbers of otbor articles for tho ladies. Mr Gabites claims that those goods are marked at fabulously low prices and there fore cannot fail to secure purchasers.
To-day Mr Goorgo Wheeler, of Burford, Stanway, advertises for sale a Hereford jearliog bull, winner of first prizes at tbe Manawatti and West Coast A. and P. Show, Palmerston North, and tbo Wellington Shows, also ten two year old heifers. Mr Wheeler notifies that anyone wishing for a yearling bull next npring can bespeak or select one by applying to him. To-day Mr Arnott, who is one of the oldest settlers on the Manchester block, departed from Feilding with his wife and family for their new home in Apiti. Mr and Mrs Arnott have left many friends behind them who will be always glad to hear of the continued prospenty of an honest and industrious family who have earned the good will and respect of all who have come in contact with thorn, Tho Hawera Star says that one of tho milk suppliers to the Eltham factory has a cow whose milk when carofully weighed is 471bs daily. This at the price paid last year (3|d per gallon) would give a daily yield of 1 6 s£d, or 10s 2£d per week ; so that, reckoning nothing for whey, a herd of thirty euch cows would bring in more than £15 per week at the height of the season.
The steamer Jeanie, of the Arctic Whaling fleet, which has just arrived at San Francisco, reports that the sperm whaler Newport passed last winter in the Herschel Islands, and, aided by a sea particularly free from ice, worked her way north this summer in pursuit of wholes as far as 84dctf., or within 60deg of the North Pole. This is the most northerly point that man has ever reached The ship was unable to procceed anj further; but it is believed that, had the Newport been supplied with dogs and sleds, tho Jfolo could easily hare been reached over the ice. Eecentiy at Hoanoke, Ua., (U.S. A), a city of more than 16,000 inhabitants, a negro got into dispute with a woman over a trade, attacked her brutally, and beat her into insensiblity. Subsequently the lynchers got possession of the prisoner, hanged him, and then riddled him with shot. Mayor Trout was obliged to flee to Lynchburg i to escape the same fate as the negro. | A terrible accident happened near Crookwell, New South Wales, last week, to Mr J. G. Savage, a farmer residing at Wattle Grange. He went to a creek with a cask on a slide, with the object of getting a supply of water. While unfastening the horse from the slide the animal ! bounded forward, and by some means tbe chain caught round Savage's leg, and the horse bolting, he was dragged through the bush for nearly a mile. When the horse was stopped it was found that Savage's neck was broken, his chest smashed in, both legs broken, and his body otherwise frightfully mutilated The man's wifo was a witness of the accident. Mr Wm Carthow cvidontly doos not believe in doing things by halves. As will bo seen ou iuspeotion of his large stock of Christmas cards, annuals, books, toys, and ornaments of ovory conceivable doscription, that particular euro has boen taken in ihe selection. Mementos of a joyous Christmas tide aro there in ondlosg variety and now dosigns are introduced. There are aluminium, celluloid and ivory cards, either folding, on easels, or ordinary, on which ore hand painted flowers, and wording to suit every occasion " Santa Ulaua " should find a good selection in mechanical toys, dolls and ornaments. For the houeo-wife there are Japanese cards traye, and hall mirrors in plush of beautiful designs, and pretty photo frames are not forgotton. The stock of annuals with colored pictures is yorv large and varied as, also, is tho soleot:on of prize books for children. In fact, the establishment has to be inspected before oyen a remoto idea can be gained of the extensive supplies contained within the four walls of Me Carthow'a shop.
