The Government decided lo tnke Mr Lee's'motion, with reference to Mr Barton holding a brief from Proudfoot in his action against the. Railway CommiSo sioners, in the ordinary way. Mr Lee sougbt to gain his end by moving the adjournment of the House last night in order th discuss the matter. A long debate followed, resulting in the defeat of the Government by 69 to 48. The Premier ■ said . the attack was not upon Mr Barton but upon the Govern* ment, and declared he was quite prepared to abide iby the result, , . The situation will be considered in Cabinet fo-day,j.and. the Premier will probably meet the House to-day, at noon, with the Government intentions After the House adjourned, Mr Read, the leader of,the. Opposition, expressed an opinion that the Government would remain in office until the electors re pealed last night’s dose. ;
