Feilding Borough Council.

. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last evening, there being present—the Mayor (in the chair), and Crs Carthew, Chamber lain, Fowles, Gould, Lethbridge, Sandilands, Thompson, and Worsfold. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Joseph Belfifc, applying to have a hole filled in opposite his section in Warwick street. From Mrs Evans, thanking the Council for past help, and stating that she had removed to Taonui, but would still be glad of the same. From Charles Carr, applying for an auctioneer’s license. From T. Dixon, asking Council to form portion of Simon street, between bis and Mr Stevens’ gate. From Mr James Wilson, calling attention to the bad state of Rink’s road. From John Prior, re Reel ea ion reserve, reminding Council that a resolution should be passed appointing certain members to sign Deed of Trust, etc. , From Wm. Baker, asking to have a portion of Wells’ street formed, between Fergnsson and Eyre streets. From C. P. Mai, requesting the t'oun cil to form, and metal the remainder of West street. From W. Hodren, requesting that an approach be made to section 120, Warwick street. From J. Greenwood, applying to have footpath formed for a chain past section No. 226, on the usual conditions, in addition to two chains already applied for in Bowen street. From Dr Jobnston, drawing attention to injury being done to that portion of Poole street near the river, as it is dangerous to wheeled traffic MAKINO STREAM. The Mayor stated that he had in structed the Clerk to write to all property owners, whom it would he likely to affect, asking if they would hold the Council responsible for auy damage that might occur to their properties if the Makino were diverted from its natural course into a straight line from Manchester street bridge to the bridge in Warwick street, and the following replies had been received :

From Dr Johnston, stating that he would not hold the Council sible, and from Messrs T. Evans, T. W- K. Foster (Secretary : Foresters’ Lodge), C. A. E. Giesen (for Colonists’ 2 Land and Loan Corporation), and'! Messrs Nathan & Co. (Wellington) to the same effect. Messrs D. and W. Hanson wrote declining to guarantee no.t.to hold the Council responsible for any damages that might occur to their property. Considerable discussion took place on the subject, Councillors generally being of the opinion that owners were more likely to have their property damaged through the stream being allowed to continue its present course than if it were diverted Or Thompson proposed, Cr Chamberlain seconding, That Crs Sandilands, Lethbridge, and the Mayor* elect interview Mr Manson on the subject —Agreed to. REPORTS. The Inspector of Nuisances reported on several matters, and advising the Council what steps should be taken. The Clerk of Works reported that the bridge in South street was nearing completion, and was expected to be finished within a fortnight.—With reforence to the Oroua river bed, he would recommend that au approach should be formed and metalled, to enable persons to reach the river bed, at a cost of £3.—About six chains of Simon street, approaching Mr Dixon’s gate, is unformed, which Mr Dixon had applied to have done. If about two chains near Mr Dixon’s gate is formed, and the terrace near Mr Stevens’ gate graded, at a cost of £3, this would meet the requirements of the case.—Thought that Rink’s road would be in a very bad state during winter owing to cattle traffic. To metal it 10 feet wide would cost about £4.—The attention of the Council was drawn to the provisions of the Con tractors aud Workmen’s Lien Act, especially to section 12 of the same. RESOLUTIONS. Proposed by Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Gould, That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted and that the accounts as read be passed for payment—Carried. Proposed by Cr Gould, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the works reported on by the Clerk of Works be carried out.—Carried. Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded by Cr Carthew, That Mr Mai’s request re making a portion of West street be complied with.—Carried. Cr Thompson proposed, Cr Gould seconding, That Mr Greenwood’s application to have one chain of footpath formed in Stafford street be granted on the usual terms. Carried.

Ci- "YVorsfold proposed, Cr Carthew seconding, That the application of Mr Hodren be referred to the Public Works Committee.—Carried.

Proposed by Cr Lethbridge, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the matter referred to by Mr Beltit be referred to Public Works Committee. —Carried.

Proposed by Cr Gould, seconded by Cr Thompson, That a portion of Wells street be formed as requested by Mr Baker.—Carried

Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Thompson, That Cr SandUands and the mover be authorised to sign the Trust Deed of the Recreation Keserve on behalf of this Council, and affix the seal of the Borough thereto. Carried.

Proposed by Cr Sandilands, secby Cr Chamberlain, That applications be invited by advertisement fpr the position of Borough Valuer for the ensuing year. Applicants to state price for which they are prepared to carry out the duties. Applications to be sent in to the Finance Committee.—Carried.

Proposed by Cr Lethbridge, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That Cr Sandilands be appointed to sign and affix the seal of the Borougli to the agreement between thp Council and Mr Flavall as Inspector of Nuisances. —Carried.

The Clerk was instructed to inform the chairman of the Library Committee that the Council would agree to pay half the cost of the skylight which had been put in. This being all the business tho Council adjourned.
