Palmerston District Hospital Board
The annual meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present — Messrs Snelson (chairman), Park, Bavenhill, Ransome, Kendall, Nye, Lethbridge, and Taylor. Mr JKavenhill proposed, That Mr Taylor be chairman for the ensuing year. He thought Palmerston should not always have a monopoly in this respect.— Seconded by Mr Kendall. Mr Park proposed, as an amendment, That Mr Snelson be re-elected. He was of opinion that the chairman should reside in Palmerston, as his services were often required.— Sec* onded by Mr Nye. Mr Lethbridge was also of opinion that the chairman should reside in Palmerston. If Mr Taylor was elected it would mean great expense to the Board as the chairman would often be required at short notice. He would vote for any other member living in the vicinity, though he would be glad to see Mr Taylor in the chair, on account of the very great executive abilities possessed by him. He favored the chairmanship going round the table if it could be managed without additional expense. Mr Taylor said he would leave the matter in the hands of the meeting. If they entrusted him with the chairmanship he would do his best in the interests of the Board. Mr Nye was of opinion that the chairman should reside within easy distance of the hospital, at least for this year while there was so much to do. Mr Taylor then withdrew his nomination and Mr Snelson was reelected chairman. Correspondence was read and .dealt with as follows : — From Messrs Tripe, accepting position of honorary dentists to the hospital. From Messrs Haynes, Ellis, Tanner, Chubbin, and Alexander, applying for position as probationers in the hospital. — Received. From Foxton Borough Council, forwardimg an application for relief from Mrs Allan. It appeared that the applicant was an aged woman who could do little work, and she had three children who were cripples. — The clerk was instructed to make inquiries into the case. Mr W. Park was unanimously reelected to the position of Treasurer to the Board, and the Chairman and Messrs Park and Ravenhill were reelected as the Executive Committee. It was decided that the monthly meeting of the Board be held on the second Thursday of each month ; the next meeting to be held in January. The following letter was received from Drs Macintire and Porter: — " The hospital has now sixteen patients in the wards, leaving only nine beds vacant for the accommodation of the patients expected from Wanganui, numbering, we understand, twelve to fifteen. We would suggest to your Committee the advisableness of intimating to the medical men of the district, the members of the Board and others, that, for the present, none but accidents or very urgent cases can be conveniently admitted without previous notice being given to the secretary, and a reply from him being obtained, notifying that there is a vacancy in the hospital for the case." — The suggestion was adopted. On the motion of Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Nye, the secretary was instructed to write to the Wanganui Board and find out what patients from this district were fit for removal, and afterwards arrange for their removal to the Palmerston Hospital. Dr Monckton, of Feilding, was appointed honorary surgeon to the hospital. The Board then adjourned.
