Longburn Freezing Company

Following is the fourth annual report of the Longburn Slaughtering and Freezing Company, to be presented to the meeting of shareholders to be held at Palmerston on Saturday, the 16th instant : —In presenting the account and balance-sheet for the year ended 30th September, your Directors regret that these show a loss on the operations for the season, together with amount written off as depreciation on buildings, machinery, and working plant, of £3,478 11s 2d. This loss is explained by the short season of fourteen weeks that the Works were in operation, and the unprecedented low prices ruling for mutton and lamb in the Home markets. The above amount of £3,847 11s 2d, together with the debit balance from last year of £2,265 sd, make 3 a total loss of £6,112 11s 7d to date. Your Directors recommend that this amount be written off the original shares, and are now taking the necessary steps to enable them to do so. The season's operations show a profit on fellmongery, boiling-down, and manure works, which, however, is more than counter-balanced by heavy losses on meat. The stock put through the Works in the time mentioned comprised 23,920 she«p and 2,714 lambs, or 26,634 in all. Applications are now being invited for slock to freeze, which we venture to hope will be largely taken advantage of. Since the last meeting another artesian supply of water has been obtained, and a brick drying-oven has been added to the Manure Works. The manures turned out prove to be a first-class article, with a good analysis, and are giving satisfaction to those using them. In accordance with the Articles of Association, two of the Directors, Messrs D. Buick and James Howard, and the Auditor, Mr G. J . Scott, now retire, but, being eligible, they offer themselves for re-election. You are also called upon to elect one Director to fill the vacancy caused through failure to elect the full number at last General Meeting.
