MR S. CARNELL (NAPIER). Mr Garnell has been an ardent politician for years. He is a staunch teetotaller, and supports direct veto. A great point in bis career is thai he has for years advocated in press and on the platform a land tax to cut up the Hawke's Bay large landed estates. Mr Carnell is a photographer by profession. He has been a member of several local bodies. MR G. J. SMITH (OHBISTCHUBCH CITY) Mr Smith is a solicitor, 34 years of age. He was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne. He served in a solicitor's I office, and came to New Zealand in 1880, receiving an appointment in the office of Garrick, Cowlishaw, and Fisher. He has been a member of the Sydenham Borough Council. Mr Smith is a strong Prohibitionist, and was one of the celebrated Sydenham Licensing Committee whose prohibition decree has provoked so much discussion. MB AY. W. COLLINB (CHniSTOHtrBOH CITY) Mr Collins was born in Staffordshire in 1854. He was first educated at a private school, and afterwards at the Midland Institute, Birmingham. He was employed for some years in the manufacturing business of his father, but eventually became a Freethought lecturer, and has followed that profession ever since. MR C. HALL (WAIPAWA). Mr Hall has taken a keen interest in local politics, and as done good service as » member of the local Land Board. He was at one time a bookseller in Woodville. He has been a strong temperance man for years past. Mr Hall was a strong supporter o£ Mr W.C. Smith. MR D. PINKERTON (dONEDIN CITY). Mr Pinkerton, one of the most active of the labour party, was born in 1839 at the villege of Kirknewton, nine miles west of Edinburgh. He was apprenticed to the bootmaking trade. He has been actively associated with the labour cause in Dunedin, where he has lived for nearly 40 years. Mr Pinkerton headed the polls for Dunedin at the last general election. MR W. EARNSHAW (DUNEDIN CITY). Mr Earnshaw, who also entered Parliamentary life in the 1890 election, is another prominent labour member. He was bom in Manchester in 1852. He is a brass and iron founder by trade. He has had to fight his way in the world, and has done it well. G. W. RDSSELL, (rICCARTON); Is a member of the firm of Russell and Willis, printers, Christchufch. He learned the business of a printer in the Evening Post office, Wellington, but for a time gave up printers' ink for the pulpit. After a spell of evangelistic work in New Plymouth and elsewhere, in connection witlrthe Wesleyan Ministry, he returned to his first love, and, in conjunction with his brother, Mr J. R. Russell, started a paper in the Manawatu district. The brothers dissolving partnership, Mr Russell purchased the Waikato Times, which he ran for a time, while he made his debut in the political field, standing as a candidate against Major Jackson but was defeated. JOHN M'LACHXAN (iSHBOBTON). Mr M'Lachlan is a native of Ayrshire, and is by trade a plasterer. He is 54 years of age, and landed in Lyttelton in 1861. He followed his trade in Christchurch for three years, and since then has been farming in the Ellestnere : district. He. has several times tried, unsuccessfully, to get into Parliament. Once he contested a seat against Messrs E. Lee and Richardson, once against Mr E. Wakefield, and twice against Sir John Hall. He is to a large extent self educated, is ready of speech, and has a pretty good grasp of politics.
