Correspondence

A HINT FOR THE NEW MAYOR.

TO THE EDITOH OF TIIK STAR. Sir,— Some three or four months ago a paragraph appeared in your\ journal to the eftect that an effort was about to be made, by means of a public ' subscription, to enclose the four blocks in Manchester Square with posts hud chains, and thus somewhat remedy tl\e disgrace to our rising town caused by the neglected condition of so prominent a feature as the Square in its very centre. lat once signified to you my cordial approbation of the proposal, pointed out to you the unsuccessful efforts I hod made to remedy the evil when I had the honor to occupy the Mayoral chair, I sent you a guinea as my subscription towards the object in view, but my action was not responded to. I have heard nothing of the matter since. A letter, which appeared in the Star a day or two ago, complaining that horses are permitted to graze on the Square with the great risk of their injuring the newly planted trees around it, has recalled this question forcibly to my mind, It occurs to me that if our newly appointed Mayor wishes to distinguish himself and obtain the gratitude jf the burgesses, here is bis opportunity. As there is, I fear, no chance of the Borough funds being available for the purpose let him, as Mayor elect, at once set on foot the formation of an influential committee for the purpose of raising subscriptions and carrying out the desired work. I would suggest that the town and district should be canvassed and subscription lists opened at the hotels and banks, and that the sub scription lists should range, say, from a guinea down to a shilling, and you yourself would, perhaps, not object to receive subscriptions. I am, etc., Saml. Goodbehere. Feilding, December Ist, 1893.
