It is a most extraordinary thing that during the progress of the addresses of candidates and the canvassing of their several supporters in the Rangitikei i and Palmerston electorates, two of the candidates should have apparently had 1 cause to complain that they bad been I approached either directly or indirectly f with offers of money to induce them I to withdraw from the contest. The ' incident in connection with Mr Ivess > is not yet concluded, and is still sub | judicc, therefore on that we can make no comment, but in the case of Mr r Snelson it is still open for discussion. The disclosure was made by Mr Snelson at Stoney Creek, but ho did not mention by whom the oiler of bribery was made. He would not say the • Government offered him the money, [ but he would say that " somebody " offered it to him, and he believed the Government were interested in that " somebody." When it is remembered i how particularly anxious the Government are to secure the two seats in ■ question, it is almost impossible for even the most unprejudiced persons not to suspect that " where there is smoke there is fire." We have known Mr Snelson for many years, and feel assured that he would not make an , authorative public statement of so serious a character, unless he was morally convinced that be was justified in so doing. ____ mm _^ mmtmi _ mm
