It is officially announced that the : Rotorua railway extension will be opened , to Tairukenga, eight miles from Rotorua : for passengers and goods on the 24th inst. A heavy north-easter, with rain all ' night and the forenoon to-day, completely ' spoiled the Agricultural Show. Itcleared up in the afternoon, when a thousand ' people were on the grounds. Martin's 9 Laddie took first prize in hunters able to leap three feet six inches high. The I Agricultural Association expect to lose L3OO, General regret is expressed at the | bad luck as tbe Show was the best ever r held in Auckland. | Nelson, November 17. At the Baptist Union the following resolution was passed to-day :— That the Assembly affirms its satisfaction at the increased activity for the purification of society shown in many centres of the Colony, and calls upon members of ch arches of the Union to exert themselves and employ tbeir influence for the suppression of the vice of gambling, abolition of the totalisator, suppression of drink ' raffio and extinction of social evils. i; Post Chalmers, November 10 James Henderson, foreman of the r Railway woods yard, Port Chalmers, was ' drowned at noon to»day in the baths.
