Wool Sales.
Messrs Barraud and Abraham received by the San Fraacisco mail, yesterday, the following report from their London agents, Messrs R. T. Curnbull & Co., dated October 6th :— Wool— The fourth series of the year's wool sales opened on the 19th September, and was intended to last till llth current. It has been found possible, however, to curtail the sales, and bring them to a close to-morrow. There will have been fully 200,000 bales catalogued. The attendance of Home and foreign buyers has been good from the beginning, and values were upon about the same level as the dosing July prices, although a somewhat lower range had been expected As the sales progressed there was a little irregularity in prices, and the market visibly weakened, but soon recovered again with a firmer tendency which has been well maintained. America is not only out of the market but has shipped back for sale here several thousand bales which were bought earlier in the year. This has of course affected the prices of superior greasy Merinos, but not to such an extent as had been anticipated, while the finer scoured Merinos have maintained their position. In cross* breds the medium sorts of greasy have risen about £d above July, and the coarser qualities about the same ; and the finest grades remain very firm, and are quotably higher than at last sales. France and the Home trade have bought most, while Germany has abstained. The next sales are fixed for the end of November, and the quantity is nut likely to be so large as usual. There is more confidence expressed for the future, and buyers seem to feel that the present value is a good basis to start from.^ There will be carried over from the present sales some 34/35,000 bales, about 7,000 of which were catalogued and bought in.
