A man, who is said to be Mr Newman, a resident of Shannon, met with a serious accident yesterday afternoon on the line near Marton. The express train from Wellington was near* ing the Marlon-Bolls road, and just as it was rounding a turning the engine-driver noticed a man on the line He whistled, but it was too late, the engine striking him on the back of the head and the shoulder. He was taken on to Marton, and now lies at the Railway Hotel Although very seriously hurt, his injuries are not deemed to be fatal. Newman is said to be deaf, and this would account for his not hearing the warning whistle of the driver.
