The Milking Machine

There is reason to belie?e (writes the Londou correspondent to the Leader) that before rery long the practice of milking cows by machinery will become almost universal. During the last few years two or three inventions have been tested practically and with such good results as to encourage mechanics to farther efforts. A new machine, patented by Dr Shields and Mr Elliott, tried recently at the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire Association, gave great satisfaction to the dairy farmers present. The nov elty of the invention consists in the action of the teat cups, which is a combination of suction and pulsation, and is a remarkably close imitation of the sucking of a calf. Even restive cows soon prove amenable to the soothing influence of this contrivance, and by its means one can milk five cows at once. The Scottish Farmer and the Farming World are both enthusiastic over the new invention, aDd there seems some reason to suppose thnt tt will revolutionise the old system.
