The Stipends of Clergymen
A MINISTER GUMDIGGING. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, October 25. At the Anglican Diocesan Sjnod to-day t long and animated discussion took place upon the desirableness of establishing a central fund for the payment of the stipends of clergy. Eloquent ad* dresses were given in favor of the scheme by the Itcvs Me Murray and Beatty, and other lay aid clerical representatives. A considerable amount of feeling was aroused by the statement of one clerical representative that his daughter saw one country clergyman going gumdiggiog. It was not known, however, whether this gentleman held a Bishop's license, and Dr Cowie said it might be safely assumed that no clergy man holding his license was gumdigging The Bishop replied with seme feeling to certain remarks by the Eey W. Beatty, warden of St John's College, upon the stipends of country clergymen. The question was referred to the incoming Standing Committee, for a report to the next meeting of the Synod.
