CASE OF SUPPOSED SUICIDE. (pee phess association.) AtrcKLASD, October 23. John Cowan, 65 years of age, a native of Scotland, who has resided 34 years at Warkworth, was found hanging from the roof of his house on Saturday. Doceased used green flax to hang himself. At the inquest a yerdict was returned of death from strangulation when in an un» sound state of mind. Win. Farquhar, master of s.s. Clans* man, was fined L 5 and costs, totalling LlB 10s, to«day, for not taking due care for the security of mails in bis care. Defendant had carried the mails in the hold, which was battened down but not locked as required by the regulations. Sir Goorge Grey has asked the Uniyer* sity Council for another week to enable him to complete his negotiations with. Professor Aldis, so as to bring about au amicable settlement between that gentleman and the Council. The annual meeting of the Anglican Diocesan Synod took place to-day. Bishop Cowie delivered an exhaustive address to the Synod, in which he referred to granting ecclesiastical franchise to women, religious instruction in board schools. «nd the higher criticism. At a mooting of the Auckland Boot Manufacturers' Association to-night the following resolution was passed :— That, as rumours are current that some of the manufacturers who are members of this association are not adhering to their statements, but are paying loner wages than that statement demands, this association desires to state they are unanimous in their determinatiou to adhere strictly to terms agreed upon." Later — Evans was not drowned but hanged hiinsejf to the hooks on the land ing stage near the Star boating shed. He had evidently been in the water as his clothes was wet.
