» . THE FIRST ENGAGEMENT. DEFEAT OF THE NATIVES. 100 OF THE ENEMY KILLED. DEATH OF CAPTAIN CAMPBELL. (PEE PBEBB ASSOCIATION). Capetown, October 20. Tbe rains which have been impeding the operations of the troops have ceased. Mr Rhodes, the Premier of Cape Colony, says he does cot want Imperial help, and Sir H. Loch ha* cabled to Lord Kipon that the local volunteers are ample for all requirements in the way of troops. News has been received that the coU umn from Fort Victoria had engaged the enemy and defeated them. The fight took place atlndinmos, midway between Fort Salisbury and Bulawayo, and 100 of the enemy were killed. The Fort 1 Salisbury column also defeated tbe enemy near the si me pi nee. The two columns then united. The Company's column has also taken .in active part ' in opposing the Matahelejt' advance. Captain Campbell whs »h# in the leg and died. There were no other casual, ties among the Company's force.
