(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, October 19. M Liodberg, one of the City clothiers, in reply to a deputation to-day, stated he was determined to continue open on Wednesday afternoons. The vital statistics for September show the deaths from measles in the four large towns fell from 26 in August to 11. The rainfall in September was 3*57 inches at Auckland, 5 36 at Wellington, 1-66 at Christchurch. 8 17 at Dunrdin. Ingle wood, as usual, was the highest with 13*07, and .12 incLcs fell at Grey* mouth. At a meeting of the Education Board the following resolution wus passed — " The attention of the Board having been called to the system of excessive home lessons said to exist in some schools in the district, the Board strongly disapproves such course and recommends teachers to give as little home exercises as possible. Arithmetic and writing exercises at home being especially disapproved of." His Excellency the Governor left for Melbourne to- day in the Waihora. Marten, This day. A young man named Thomas Elliott was arrested yesterday on a charge of insanity Committed to-day to the Wellington Asylum. Mabterton, October 19. A man named Joseph Andrews, of Tawatai road, near Alfredton. was found hanging in the bush near his residence. He had been missing for several days. It is evidently a case of suicide. Cuuistcbvucu, October 19. Twenty unemployed left to-day for Lillburn road works, Southland. The Hou Mr Reeves bus made arrangements for two more batches to leave in a few days. Ten men go to bush work at Waikawa on Saturday, and twenty to the Government works in the North Island on Monday or Tuesday.
