MELBOURNE NOTES. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION I. Melbourne, October 17. Sternchaser is at 100 to 5 for the Melbourne Cup. Last night Vakeel was heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup down to 100 to 7. At the same time Malvolio advanced to 100 to 6. There are '61 acceptors for the Canlfield Cup, the list being as follows . — Stratan, For tuna t us, Sternchaser, Realm, Wild Rose, Torcoola, Vakeel, Graduate, Oxide, Grey Gown, Brockleigh, Donation, Moss Rose, Tridentate, Port Admiral, Beverley, Newman, Donizetti, Fulbam, Sanfoin, Tim Swiveller, Jeweller, Hartington, John S., Althotas, Pippins, Division, Lord Grenville, Moscow, Somniloquist, and Cressy. Stratan was backed to day to win 5000 down to 100 to 5. Oxide was supported to about tho same extent, down to 100 to 8. Pounamu did a good mile at Caulfield this morning. Sternchaser had a long spell of medium work and appeared perfectly sound.
